My most favorite activity when I visited my grandmother was to watch her make buttermilk biscuits before each meal. The nimbleness of her fingers as she gently mixed the flour, buttermilk and lard in her wooden bowl was amazing. The end result was a pile of fluffy biscuits with a crisp outer crust. Truly Heaven on earth! In my attempts to replicate the process, I ended up with biscuits that resulted in a hard, hockey pucks that could keep the NHL amply supplied for generations. That being said, my father and I set out to create a mix that anyone could bake successfully... even me. Eureka! Inspired by grandma, you can now enjoy the delicious buttermilk taste of fluffy biscuits finished with a cripsy outer crust.

Just add water. Now, for the secret... it's all in how you mix them. When you add the water, mix it just enough to moisten all the ingredients. Enjoy these southern drop biscuits with your favorite jam, jelly, molasses or my favorite... butter and honey. YUM!

DIRECTIONS: Easy Drop Biscuits: Preheat oven to 450 F. Pour Mix in bowl and add 3/4 cup of water and mix using as few strokes as possible to moisten dough. Drop portions of dough onto lightly greased baking pan. Place in oven and cook for 10 to 12 minutes or until done. Yield 10-12 Biscuits.

Delicious Variations:

Garlic Cheddar Biscuits:  If you want a real treat anytime of the day just add 1 cup of sharp cheddar cheese and Sassy Roasted Garlic Dip Mix and coat the tops with a little melted butter before you bake them.

Breakfast Muffins:  1 cup of Julia's Pantry Southern Drop Biscuit Mix, 1 lb cooked sausage, 4 eggs beaten, and 1 cup of shredded cheddar cheese. Bake in a 350 degrees oven for 20 minutes. Serve with our organic, yellow grits and fresh fruit. YUM! Great as an on-the-go breakfast. 

Sassy Sausage Balls:  10oz pkg  (approximately 2 cups) of Julia's Pantry Southern Drop Biscuit Mix, 1 package of Original Sassy Dip Mix, 1 pound of sausage and 1 1/2 cups of sharp cheddar cheese.  Mix together until well blended.  Roll into balls.  Bake in 400 degree oven for approximately 10 minutes are until golden brown.  Plan Ahead Tip:  After rolling into balls, place on baking sheet and place in the freezer.  Once frozen, transfer to zip lock bag.  Bake frozen sausage balls according to directions for a quick, anytime appetizer, treat or breakfast.

Becky's Bread Pudding

Becky's Bread Pudding Recipe with Bourbon Sauce:  Place a dozen cooked (leftover) Julia's Pantry Southern Drop Biscuits, broken into pieces, into a greased 9x12 casserole dish.  In a bowl, mix 4 eggs, 2 sticks of melted butter, and 1 cup of sugar.  Add 1 Tablespoon of vanilla, 1/4 tsp. nutmeg, and 2 cups of milk.  Fold in 1 cup crushed pineapple, 1 cup raisins, and 1/2 cup flaked coconut.    Pour the batter over the biscuits and let it soak in well. (Add more milk if needed.)  Top with 1/2-3/4 cup chopped nuts if desired.  Bake at 350 degrees for about 35 minutes or until the liquid is cooked and the top is browned.   Then serve with a little bourbon sauce (optional).

Bourbon Sauce

1 cup granulated sugar
6 Tablespoons Butter, melted
1/2 cup Buttermilk
1 Tbs (or more) Bourbon
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1 Tbs white corn syrup
1 teas. vanilla

In a sauce pan, mix all ingredients.  Bring to a boil for 1 minute.  Serve Warm.  Enjoy!!
